Welcome to HSG Videos

Director The HSG Videos page provides publicly available videos/media (i.e. our own and others) that directly or indirectly relate to the HITECH Act and/or to EHR implementations. However, we will also include media (video, audio, presentations, etc.) related to healthcare in general that we find either interesting, humorous, or both. The media will be categorized for ease of use, but like any other taxonomy, it will not be perfect (i.e. some media will clearly span multiple categories).

Some media is provided by vendors as promotional material. If we find the media's content useful to our readers, then the fact that it is vendor produced will not dissuade us from listing it. However, unless clearly specified, HSG does not have any relationships with these vendors (advertising or otherwise). If you are aware of high quality media that meets the criteria above, then please send us the URL, we will be happy to review your suggestions.

Collaboration

Megaphone3 In order for providers not to be found in "willful neglect" you will have to demonstrate to HHS, or potentially to a court of law, that you have visible demonstrable evidence that you are in compliance with HITECH. One way to do that is to leverage inexpensive (or FREE) horizontal enabling technologies that will allow you to effectively track your compliance initiatives. To learn how Google Apps can be leveraged as a collaboration (and compliance) platform click here. HSG does not get paid to say nice things about Google, we simply like and use their collaboration software. HSG believes that many providers (especially smaller providers) can benefit as well.

Back to Table of ContentsThe video below illustrates how Genentech uses Google Apps for email and other collaborative activities.

Back to Table of ContentsThe video below illustrates how  SF Bay Pediatrics, a group of Board Certified Pediatricians who are dedicated to the care and well being of children, uses Google Apps as core collaborative infrastructure component for their practice.

Back to Table of ContentsIn the video below the CIO of Essilor, a worldwide leader in the design and manufacture of lenses, discusses the power of Google Apps for a global enterprise.

Education

Megaphone3 This category contains various examples of educational media that pertain either to HITECH Act compliance or to an EHR implementation. Likewise, as in other categories, this category may contain other media that is generally related to healthcare and technology if HSG finds that it may of interest to our readers. This category could potentially be quite broad in scope and may subsequently need to be broken down into sub-categories.

Back to Table of ContentsThis video describes a tool that will help providers select that "right" EHR system for their practice specialty. Clearly there is a need for these kinds of tools since there is little doubt that EHR land is a jungle.

Back to Table of ContentsThis video describes an ABC News Report on the VA's VISTA EHR system an indicates that there is a broad consensus among even those that oppose healthcare reform that EHRs are mission critical.

Back to Table of Contents This video demonstrates that the idea of electronic health records have been around for a long time. In this case back to 1961 and the dawn of the mainframe era.

Back to Table of Contents This video demonstrates that power of dictation when used with an EHR. Quite remarkable what can be done with this type of technology now that it has matured.

Electronic Health Records (EHRs)

Megaphone3 This category contains various example of EHR usage and testimonials from practitioners and facilities that have already been down this road. Hopefully HSG readers can gain some insights into best practices, and equally important, the pitfalls that should be avoided. We suggest that readers pay particular attention to the people, process and platform issues discuss, and refrain from becoming too enamored with "wiz bang" technology in and of itself. Mostly HSG hopes that our readers will find these videos educational.

Back to Table of ContentsWell at least on doctor believes that EHRs provide a significant ROI in more than just monetary terms.

Back to Table of ContentsAn interesting take on the EHR value proposition and why paper must go away eventually. This is an incredibly nicely done infomericial that is really worth watching because of its high content value.

Entertainment

Megaphone3 This category contains various entertaining videos (at least HSG thinks so). Many of these videos have been included in our newsletters to add a little levity to otherwise (often) mind numbingly dry topics (no really?). HITECH and HIPAA are necessary evils. However, despite the fact that HSG considers both to be essential: 1) because both are still "good law" (i.e. remain on the book last time we checked); and 2) because we simply cannot sustain a functional 21st century healthcare industry without paying attention to privacy and security; we are under no illusions that all but the geekiest among us would prefer to read just about anything other than statutes and regulations. Enjoy!

Back to Table of ContentsHITECH / HIPAA is really serious business.

Back to Table of ContentsHealth 2.0 is coming soon to a theater near you.

Back to Table of ContentsOur thanks to e-Patient Dave for sharing this great video that describes how the Internet is becoming a "fast-track" option for patient education on health conditions and disease.

Back to Table of ContentsHealthcare explained on the back of a napkin? Thanks to visual presentation guru Dan Roam for making this presentation available on Slideshare. It's about Healthcare reform and not the HITECH Act, however, somebody should do something similar for HITECH (any creative types listening)?

Laws & Regulations

Megaphone3 This category will contains mostly HSG specific media. However, there are clearly other publishers producing quality content regarding HITECH Act laws and regulations, where appropriate these will be included as well.

Back to Table of ContentsThis video provides an excellent overview of HITECH Act incentive payments in an easy to understand and readily digestible format.

Back to Table of ContentsThis video provides an overview of Meaningful Use under the HITECH Act. It is not current with the recently released (circa 1/2010) HHS Interim Final Rules but does provide a solid baseline understanding of the meaningful use concept.

Back to Table of ContentsThere are lots of good healthcare blogs; Dr. Halamka's in one of the best. That said, we "live and breathe" HITECH, and are constantly surprised by the scope of what it encompasses. Reviewing Dr. Halamka's presentation brought that point home once again. We encourage our readers to read (and study) the presentation, but do not be surprised if it raises as many questions as it answers, that is simply the nature of the beast.

The Standards Rule and the NPRM for Meaningful Use

Policy

Megaphone3 This category will include media which includes commentary regarding "why things are they way they are" from a policy rationale perspective, or similarly, "why things should be different."   In general, HSG primarily focuses on the way things are and provides content that allows our readers to ascertain (and interpret) the current state of the law. However, there are times when understanding the policy rationale is quite helpful is understanding the underlying authority and in that spirit that the media contained in this category will be aggregated.

Back to Table of ContentsThis video shows Bill Clinton at his best. He simply has no equal when it comes to getting at the heart of the matter on a policy question.

Standards

Megaphone3 This category will contain media that sheds light on the various standards that have been adopted by HHS in accordance with the HITECH Act. As most of you know HIT Standards will play a critical role in the widespread adoption of EHRs. HHS/ONC is moving aggressively to specify the requisite standards that must be used in conjunction with a Certified Electronic Health Record system/application.

Back to Table of ContentsThis is the best video we have found that illustrates why the healthcare industry needs standards. It could have also gone under the Entertainment section but it really is that funny, rather quite absurd actually.

Technology

Megaphone3 This category will contain media that illustrates various enabling technologies that could play a central role in the implementation of a national healthcare infrastructure. The scope of this category we likely be quite broad, ranging from social media to the plumbing required to effectively exchange protected health information (PHI).

Back to Table of ContentsIn this video Dr. David Blumenthal lays out ONC's (i.e. the Obama administration's) technology roadmap as it pertains to the HITECH Act. This was circa August 2009 and much has happened since, however it still provides a good baseline view.
