Complexity Is Chaos

Keep It Simple, Stupid. OK, that may be an overstatement, but when it comes to most apps that we use, it is almost always true. Why? Because there is only so much complexity that we can handle and we already (usually) have enough complexity in our lives doing what we do for our main event (for most of us that means how we make a living).

So yes, depending on what we do, we will have to master the complexity of the apps that help us get our work done, but if we are doing something else (online banking) we are desperately craving simplicity. If it is not simple we will eventually stop using it and revert to something that is.

A couple of good features, or as the link suggests one great one, is worth 100 hundred crappy/mediocre ones.

Twitter Me Not!

OK, I confess I must be getting old (true) and turning into a Luddite. But unless you are essentially in the journalism business, whether mainstream or not, I still don't see the general purpose business use case for Twitter.

Not that this matters, since the site continues to grow in popularity and is acquiring more than its fair of quality talent from the big boys. If the value proposition is "status updates" the question becomes just how often is that necessary?

It seems like a certain percentage of the population has lots of bandwidth for this sort of activity, but I have to wonder given the current economic conditions, how long this will last. Sooner or later, even the "chattering classes" will have to do "real work"--or so it seems.

A Mile in My Shoes?

That's the title of a wonderful blog I just ran across. It is not about technology or the law but more about things we often lose sight of while we focus on the constant stream of information that we process on a daily basis.

Lately that constant stream just sounded like noise to me and therefore web-tones has been silent, there are other reasons as well, but those are only relevant to the community that has "walked a mile in my shoes" and for that community "instant messaging" happens without Twitter or the Internet.

Go figure? Perhaps this post was inspired by the blessed Easter Sunday that my wife and I just experienced. Perhaps it signals something altogether new for web-tones? Don't know yet what it signals, other than there are things we should be paying more attention to if we are ever going to build a sustainable life on this planet.
